Inter Keep Pace With Real Madrid In Group D With 3-1 Win Over Sheriff

November 04, (THEWILL) – Inter won a crucial 3-1 match over Sheriff Tiraspol on Wednesday night, leaving Champions League Group D in a tight race with only two games remaining.

Following Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over bottom-placed Shakhtar Donetsk in the early kick-off, the Nerazzurri knew they needed three points to keep pace with Los Blancos at the top of the group.

They achieved just that, with Marcelo Brozovic, Milan Skriniar, and Alexis Sanchez all scoring to seal the win.

Inter dominated possession and harassed their opponent’s goal in the first half, registering 13 shots but unable to find a breakthrough.

Five minutes before halftime, Lautaro Martinez came closest to opening the score, swivelling from 25 yards out and firing an effort into the woodwork. Edin Dzeko was also active early on, attempting five shots in the first quarter but failing to find the back of the net.

Inter continued to turn the screw after the break and eventually got the breakthrough from an unlikely source. Marcelo Brozovic is not used to scoring goals, but he dummied past two Sheriff players on the edge of the box before scoring his first Champions League goal.

Inter extended their lead just after the hour mark. Brozovic was involved once more, this time swinging in a corner that Milan Skriniar shoved over the line after his initial header had been turned down.

Substitute Alexis Sanchez then added a third only seconds after coming on, racing onto a long ball and beating his man before slamming the ball past Georgios Athanasiadis.

Sheriff did get a consolation goal with one of the game’s final shots, as Adama Traore rose high to head Sebastien Thill’s free kick into the Inter net.
