October 28, (THEWILL) – Inter returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Empoli on Wednesday, with goals from Danilo D’Ambrosio and Federico Dimarco.
Before this trip to Empoli, Simone Inzaghi’s squad had struggled in Serie A, losing to Lazio and drawing with Juventus.
However, D’Ambrosio broke the deadlock in the first half, and Inter’s task was made easier by Samuele Ricci’s dismissal after the break for a reckless challenge.
Dimarco took advantage of the opportunity to secure the points and keep the Nerazzurri in third place.
Samir Handanovic had made the first save of the game with Petar Stojanovic’s speculative long-range effort, before Dimarco tried his luck from a similar distance and was denied by Guglielmo Vicario.
When D’Ambrosio headed into the bottom-left corner after Alexis Sanchez’s dinked pass 11 minutes before halftime, the Empoli goalie was helpless to stop the opener.
On the stroke of halftime, Nicolo Barella almost increased Inter’s advantage but hit the post, before Ricci was sent off for a risky sliding challenge on the Nerazzurri midfielder after the break.
Then, either side of Sanchez’s close-range finish being called out for offside, Roberto Gagliardini headed onto the left-hand post, and Martinez was stopped by a superb Vicario save.
Dimarco added a second goal in the 66th minute, knocking in Martinez’s low cross at the back post, although the visitors should have won by more, as two more goals were called off. In the closing stages, Gagliardini was flagged for handball, and the linesman flag also went up for Stefano Sensi.
