May 21, (THEWILL) – The Chairman of the Cross River State Anti Tax Agency, Bishop Emmah Isong, says illegal taxation has been institutionalised in the state.

Bishop Isong said the vice is deep rooted and is seen as settlement for the boys and become business as usual.

He, however, added that the agency is not discouraged by this and is becoming well positioned to address the menace.

The Anti Tax boss made the disclosure in Calabar during a brief event, to mark the second year anniversary of the commission.

He said, “Illegal taxation has become institutionalised because it became a reward for the boys after elections.

“Nobody will win elections, if he does not promise certain people tax points.

“It is settlement for the boys and has become business as usual”, he said.

He, however, added that despite this, the agency is forging ahead to rid the state of illegal tax collectors.

Giving an account of the agency in two years, he said there has been a 40% reduction in illegal taxes in the state and intervened in multiple cases right abuse.

“We are not yet where we are supposed to be, but we are not where we used to be.

“40% of illegal Taxes have been wiped out and that’s a fair rating and we have intervened in multiple areas where people’s rights were abused

“Local government representatives have been employed and deployed to the 18 local government areas of the state and we have also liased and interfaced with other arms of government”, he said.

He called for increased budget allocation and financial empowerment of the agency to actualise it’s functions.

He also called on the government to proscribe some agencies that have been giving the government a bad name in the face of it’s good intentions to the people.

In addition, some politicians who engage in illegal taxation should be punished and not be allowed to enter public offices.

He added that the agency which was established as a post COVID-19 measure and a palliative to cushion the effect of the lockdown be made permanent and statutory as it is the only hope for the poor.

The Anti Tax Agency was set up by the state governor Professor Ben Ayade as a post COVID-19 palliative to help rid the state of the menace of illegal Taxes.

The agency is composed exclusively of clergy men from across the state.
