“I Felt Sad, I Can’t Deny It” – Robert Lewandowski On Losing Ballon d’Or To Messi

December 07, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has expressed the depth of his sorrow for missing out on the Ballon d’Or, which Paris Saint-Germain’s Lionel Messi took home, in what was the Argentine’s 7th prize in all.

When Messi’s name was called instead, the 34-year-old walked to the stage and admitted that Lewandowski should have received the medal, saying that he wished France Football would give the Polish forward a retrospective trophy to commemorate his feat because the awards were outrightly canceled when Lewandowski was the sure favourite.

It was a sweet sentiment from the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, who was also competing against Lewandowski for the award this year, but the Bayern star was not impressed.

“I’m not that enthusiastic about getting the 2020 award,” Lewandowski bared his mind about a retrospective award. “I would like it [Messi’s statement] to be a sincere and courteous statement from a great player and not just empty words.”

Many believed that Lewandowski, who was the clear winner in 2020, deserved the prize in 2021. This was demonstrated in the debates immediately following the announcement of Messi as the winner. However, the Bayern Munich star was forced to settle for second place.

“I felt sadness,” Lewandowski said of missing out on the Ballon d’Or this year. “I can’t deny it.

“I can’t say I was happy, on the contrary. I have a feeling of sadness. To be so close, to compete with Messi, of course I respect how he plays and what he has achieved. The mere fact that I was able to compete with him shows me the level that I was able to reach.”

Lewandowski has put himself in a strong position to win the award in 2022, having scored 27 goals in 21 games this season, compared to Messi’s four goals in 13 since joining Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.
