House Invites Jega Over Distribution Of Voter Cards

SAN FRANCISCO, July 16, (THEWILL) – House of Representatives Wednesday summoned the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, over discrepancies in the distribution of voter cards in some states.

The resolution followed the passage of a motion brought by Hon. Yakub Balogun (APC, Lagos) titled: “alleged haphazard distribution of permanent voters’ cards by the Independent National Electoral Commission and the imminent disenfrachisement of eligible voters in some states of the Federation”

Leading debate on the motion, Hon. Balogun said it was imperative that INEC should present its progress report on the distribution of the permanent voters cards within the next 48 hours to the House Committee on Electoral Matters.

He told his colleagues that INEC is the body empowered by the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) to conduct elections in Nigeria.

The lawmaker noted that part of the responsibilities of INEC was to ensure free, credible and peaceful elections as well as the provision of voters’ cards to all eligible Nigerians.

He expressed worry that available reports from states where the distributions were presently ongoing indicated that INEC had not been able to effectively replace all the temporary voters’ cards with permanent ones in those states.

According to him, “the haphazard distribution of permanent voters’ cards may lead to disenfranchisement of eligible voters, which violates the spirit and letters of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended).

“It was alleged that in some states, eligible voters, who had approached INEC for the replacement of their voter’s cards, were turned back on account that their individual permanent voters’ cards were not ready.”
