November 03, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich defeated Benfica 5-2 to advance to the Champions League knockout stages as star striker Robert Lewandowski scored a brilliant hat-trick in the triumph.

Lucas Verissimo had the ball in the net for Benfica in the 16th minute but was called offside by VAR after the ball was flicked on at the near post from a corner in a busy opening 15 minutes.

Bayern Munich broke the deadlock a little over ten minutes later. Coman, who was a constant menace down the right side, found Lewandowski at the back post, who headed home his sixth Champions League goal of the season.

Bayern’s lead was extended after a stunning play in the 32nd minute. Lewandowski, who was aware of Serge Gnabry rushing into the area behind him, managed to find the German, who deftly flicked the ball past goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos, thanks to Joshua Kimmch’s wonderful assist.

A well-crafted free-kick move down the left flank found Alejandro Grimaldo, who swung in a cross that struck the head of Morato, who guided it past Neuer just before half-time.

On the stroke of half-time, VAR awarded the hosts a penalty when Leon Goretzka’s goal-bound shot rebounded off Verissimo’s arm, but Lewandowski’s feeble effort was saved.

Bayern scored their fourth goal early in the second half, with Leroy Sane converting an Alphonso Davies half-volley that sprayed across Odysseas and into the bottom left corner.

On the hour mark, Lewandowski scored his second goal, expertly flicking the ball over Odysseas and leaving the keeper with no chance.

With 15 minutes remaining, Benfica scored a consolation goal, but Lewandowski made up for his earlier penalty miss by scoring his hat-trick five minutes from time to put the game out of reach.
