July 07, (THEWILL) – Haiti’s President Jovenel Moïse was killed early Wednesday after an attack on his home in the nation’s capital.

He was 53 years old.

The country’s Prime Minister Claude Joseph said the President’s residence in Port-au-Prince came under attack by yet unidentified armed men at 1am.

His wife, and First Lady, was reportedly injured in the attack.

PM Joseph’s statement said: “A group of individuals who have not been identified, some of whom were speaking Spanish, attacked the private residence of the President of the Republic and fatally injured the Head of State.

“All measures had been taken to guarantee the continuance of the state.”

Jovenel Moïse had been in power since February 2017, after his predecessor, Michel Martelly stepped down.

His tenure proved rocky with accusations of corruption, sparking off waves of violent anti-government protests with agitators calling for him to hand in his resignation.

Located to the North of the United States, Haiti in the Caribbeans shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic to its east and has a population of over 12 million.

Seen as about the poorest in that environment, it is located to the east of Cuba and Jamaica and south of The Bahamas and has been ravaged by earthquakes, the most devastating being the one of 2010 that left over 250,000 dead.

It decided to be part of the African continent and the former French colony will be the first non-African country to join the AU.
