April 04, (THEWILL) – Gunmen on Sunday morning, razed down the Orsu local government headquarters.
The incident, THEWILL learnt, occurred at about 2:30 am in the already troubled vicinity now abandoned for fear of gunmen and insurgency.
A resident of the area, Chibuzo Ukah, said several buildings, including the chairman’s office, administrative block and parked vehicles, among others were razed by the inferno.
According to him, the council headquarters had been abandoned by staff and visitors due to the activities of unknown gunmen and killings in the area.
The source added that young men have abandoned the area for their own safety, saying killings assumed an alarming dimension, which forced locals to move their loved ones out to safety.
He called for caution from government officials to avoid inflammatory comments that could trigger a crisis.
Imo Police spokesman, Michael Abattam, when contacted for confirmation of the incident, said: “Officially I don’t know about it for now, but let me confirm from the DPO in Orsu.”
However, the lawmaker in the Imo Assembly, Hon. Ekene Nnodumele, who confirmed the incident, said: “It happened, but we are not sure those who carried out the act.”
