October 23, (THEWILL) – Heavily armed men on Friday night attacked the Abolongo Correctional Centre in Oyo Town, freeing an unspecified number of inmates at the facility.
Sources said the gunmen stormed the facility around 9.50pm throwing grenades to scare away the officials and forcefully gain access into the facility.
The Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Correctional Service, Oyo State Command, Olarewaju Anjorin, who confirmed the attack on Saturday in Ibadan, said the attackers engaged the guards in a fierce gun battle before freeing some inmates, adding that the incident happened around 9.50 p.m on Friday.
Anjorin said: “Yes, I can confirm to you that the place was attacked and some of the awaiting inmates were set free.
“I am there right now with the Controller and some other senior officers doing an assessment of the damage done to the facility.
“Now, we cannot ascertain the numbers of the inmates freed or people that get injured, but definitely, I will be giving you an update later.”
However, it was gathered that other security agencies have mobilised their personnel to support men and women of the Service in tracking down the gunmen and re-arrest freed prisoners.
The arrival of the security operatives saw some prisoners trying to escape re-arrested immediately.
