Guinea Names Kaba Diawara Head Coach Of Men’s Team Ahead Of AFCON

December 14, (THEWILL) – Kaba Diawara, a former Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain player, has been named Guinea’s head coach one month before the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Cameroon next month.

Following the exit of Frenchman Didier Six, whose poor showing in the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers roughly a month ago resulted in his exit, the former Guinea international was temporarily appointed head coach of the Syli Nationale.

The Syli Nationale finished third in Group I after failing to win a single match in six, drew four times and lost twice to group winners Morocco.

The vice president of the Guinea FA Normalisation Committee, Sega Diallo, announced that Diawara would lead the team to the TotalEnergies AFCON, which will be held in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6, 2022.

After joining Arsenal from Girondins de Bordeaux in 1999, the 45-year-old former striker made ten appearances for the Gunners. From north London, he went on to play for Olympique Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain before joining West Ham United on loan for six months.

Prior to retiring in July 2011, Diawara had loan spells at Blackburn Rovers, Stade Rennais, OGC Nice, and Racing Ferrol.

At Africa’s largest football tournament in Cameroon, Guinea will rely on Liverpool star Naby Keita, Mady Camara, and Mohamed Bayo. Senegal, Zimbabwe, and Malawi are all in Group B with the Syli Nationale.
