Granada 0 – 1 PSV Eindhoven

SAN FRANCISCO, December 04, (THEWILL) – Matchday 5 proceedings in the UEFA Europa League Group E ties pitched La Liga club Granada against the Dutch side Eindhoven at the Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes in Spain. The visitors earned a deserved win for an impressive performance, though both sides have cause for celebration thanks to events in the other group match in Nicosia.

It was the first Europa League loss for the group-leading hosts and was largely due to a poor first-half against a much sharper and aggressive opponent with arguably the greater need for points. The deadlock was broken by a lovely goal from the in-form centre forward Donyell Malen in the 38th minute, his fourth goal in Europe.

Yet, Granada responded well and in the second period, showed characteristic resourcefulness in their push for an equaliser. Although they could not score, they managed to confirm a slot in the knockout stages as Thessalonica lost to Nicosia which certainly softens the blow of this loss for the tournament newcomers.

Granada top the group with 10 points while Eindhoven are second on nine points as they head into the final group game. Eindhoven is at home to Nicosia next while Granada take on the Greeks.

Omonia Nicosia 2 – 1 PAOK Thessaloniki FC
Nicosia snatched the win late on in an entertaining night of European football as the Group E sides slugged it out for qualification chances.

The home side took the lead through Andronikos Kakoullis only for Christos Tzolis to equalise before the break. Nigerian midfielder Abdulahi Shehu came on as a 21st minute substitute and was solid in the middle of the park throughout.

Though the second half was dominated by PAOK, a late Jordi Gómez penalty gave Henning Berg’s Omonoia their first ever Europa League win. However, sadly for PAOK and Omonoia they are both out of this year’s competition.
