Group Condemns Arrest Of Nnamdi Kanu

June 30, (THEWILL) – A group, TakeitBack Movement Global, has strongly condemned the re-arrest and detention of leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

THEWILL reports that Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, had on Tuesday announced the re-arrest of Nnamdi Kanu by joint security agencies.

He was subsequently arraigned before the Federal High Court, Abuja and remanded in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) by Justice Binta Nyako.

Describing Kanu’s trial as “unfair, unjust and a violation of his human right,” the group knocked the government for hiding under “frivolous grounds of jumping bail,” while Kanu is actually “being remanded and persecuted based on his agitation for self-determination for the Indigenous People of Biafra.”

The group, in a statement signed by its Director of Communications, Dr. Chidi Nwanyanwu, warned of any attempt at extrajudicial actions against Kanu and called for his release, citing his rights to hold opinion in favour of self-determination under international law

United Nations Charter in Article 1 on Self Determination, says: “All peoples shall have the right to existence. They shall have the unquestionable and inalienable right to self-determination. They shall freely determine their political status and shall pursue their economic and social development according to the policy they have freely chosen.”

Also, it is important to note that The African Charter of Human and Peoples’ Rights of 1981, Part 1 (Rights and Duties) Article 20 section 1 emboldens thus:

“All peoples shall have the right to existence. They shall have the unquestionable and inalienable right to self-determination. They shall freely determine their political status and shall pursue their economic and social development according to the policy they have freely chosen,” the group cited.

It further called “For a unity of all oppressed people from all walks of life within the country, to bond in unanimous effort for the nation’s Referendum as a matter of priority to put a permanent end to systemic tyranny, incompetence, corruption, insecurity, banditry, lawlessness, crass ineptitude and all poverty policies that have been the hallmark of this regime.”
