November 09, (THEWILL) – Brittney Griner, an American basketball player, imprisoned in Russia, for what the United States claims to be wrongful detention, is being transferred to a correctional colony, according to her attorneys’ announcement on Wednesday.
Griner, a centre for the Phoenix Mercury WNBA club, was arrested in February, at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport, when Russian investigators claimed to have discovered vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage.
Maria Blagovolina and Alexander Boykov, attorneys of Griner said: “We do not have any information on her exact current location or her final destination.”
After Griner’s attorneys filed an appeal, the Russian court upheld the 32-year-old’s nine-year prison sentence in October. Officials from the United States believe that Griner is being held against her will.
The judicial hearings have been referred to as a charade by national security adviser, Jake Sullivan. Karine Jean-Pierre, the communications secretary for the White House, stated that the government is still trying to secure her release.
