SAN FRANCISCO, November 05, (THEWILL) – Yobe State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Gaidam , has called on the Federal Government to immediately replicate the vaccination of livestock that was started in the state on Tuesday in all the nation’s border towns and states of the federation.

The exercise meant to checkmate the spread of animal diseases in the country, was inaugurated by the governor in Damaturu, the State capital

Speaking at the occasion, Gaidam said Yobe remains one of the nation’s largest producers of livestock even as he stressed that the decision of the government to embark on the vaccination was informed by the need to prevent the spread of animal diseases around its border with foreign countries.

Gaidam disclosed that 800,000 cattle, 900,000 sheep and goats as well as 2,500 dogs will be vaccinated against various diseases during the exercise, insisting that the efforts of the state government will be an effort in futility if the exercise is not conducted around border areas.

Maintaining that 80 per cent of economic losses nationally is as a result of poor livestock production, the governor promised that the state government will do its best in boosting the economy.

Calling on other states to emulate Yobe, Gaidam noted that the efforts of the state government towards creating grazing reserves and cattle route has curtailed the clashes between cattle rearers and farmers in the state .

The State Commissioner of Animal and Fisheries, Alhaji Idrissa Machinama, who also spoke at the occasion, said adequate vaccines have been provided for the exercise as over five million livestock across the state will be vaccinated.
