November 08, (THEWILL) – The Super Eagles of Nigeria will be without goalkeeper Francis Uzoho of Omonia Nicosia for their Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Liberia and Cape Verde. Uzoho has withdrawn from the squad due to illness and has been replaced by Enyimba goalkeeper John Noble.
The 23-year-old had lost his spot in the national squad to Maduka Okoye, although he was in goal for the match against the Central African Republic last month at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, after coach Gernot Rohr was unhappy with Okoye’s tardiness in getting to camp.
The Super Eagles just need to win one of their remaining two games to qualify for the playoff round. With a win over Liberia in Tangiers on Saturday, they stand a good chance of clinching their place in the playoffs.
The players are set to arrive in camp on Monday, and preparations for the game have already begun.
Salisu Yusuf and Joseph Yobo, Super Eagles assistant coaches, Alloy Agu, goalkeeper’s trainer, and other Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officials will leave the country on Monday for Morocco ahead of the tie against Liberia, which will be held at the Grand Stade de Tangier in Morocco at 5 pm.
In a widely divisive move, former international Odion Ighalo, who is based in Saudi Arabia, was included in Rohr’s 23-man squad, summoned from retirement for the last matches of the first phase of the World Cup qualifiers.
