BEVERLY HILLS, February 01, (THEWILL) – Ex- Minister of Information and Culture, Tony Momoh, has died, aged 81.
He reportedly died on Monday at his residence in Abuja during a brief illness.
A veteran journalist, lawyer and politician, Momoh, was a former editor of The Daily Times from 1976 to 1980 and at different times General Manager of publications and training of the organisation.
He served as Nigerian Minister of Information during the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida, between 1986 and 1990.
In January 2011, he became the National Chairman of the now defunct (President Muhammadu Buhari’s), Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, one of the ‘legacy parties’ which merged to form the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
He was educated at Government School Auchi, the school Momoh the First had established at Auchi in 1922. He also attended Teacher Training College, Abraka, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, the University of Lagos, and the Nigerian Law school.
He had degrees in Mass Communication and Law and was a solicitor and advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
He also served as Chairman of the Board of Nigeria Airways and was a member of the Nigerian Press Council. Prince Tony Momoh was awarded many honours, including fellowships of the Commonwealth Journalists’ Association, the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, and the Advertising Council of Nigeria. He was a member of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and a fellow of the Nigerian Guild of Editors.
He is survived by his wife, many children and grandchildren.
