Flood Traps Air Passengers As Lagos Witnesses Heavy Downpour

June 19, (THEWILL) – Most of the roads that lead to Murtala Mohammed Airport (MMA) were flooded on Saturday, as heavy rain wreaked havoc on motorists and other commuters.

The downpour, which began at about 4am lasted for several hours, disrupting the movement of most air passengers heading towards the airport at Ikeja, Lagos.

THEWILL gathered that motorists and residents had herculean time trying to move in and out their houses, as well as those rushing to catch their flights.

It was also gathered that cars and properties were submerged along the popular Agege Motor road and some parts of Oshodi in Lagos, following the heavy downpour.

Some of the worst affected areas include Mushin, Oshodi, Ladipo/PWD, Agege, Gbagada, Iyana-Ipaja and few other areas.

A similar scenario was noticed at Mile 2 Oke, on Apapa-Oshodi Expressway.

Some parts of Ikeja, including Awolowo Way, Oba Akran and Ikeja-Along on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, were also affected.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had earlier informed the public to take advantage of available early warnings and promote early action for risk reduction.

Prof Mansur Bako Matazu, Director General/CEO of NiMet, gave the advice recently in his goodwill message at the Public Presentation of the disaster risk management implications of the 2022 flood predictions by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

According to him, a follow up on weather issues is very vital and will not only save lives, but also conserve resources for economic benefit of the entire nation.

The NiMet boss observed that over the last three decades, Nigeria has witnessed tremendous increase in temperature and rainfall, with increased occurrences of high intensity, short duration thunderstorms, which are always accompanied by strong winds and flash floods.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has urged residents of Lagos State to observe safety precautions during downpours.

Acting Assistant Zonal Coordinator, NEMA Southwest Zonal Office, Ibrahim Farinloye, said in a statement: “Once the rainwater gets to half of the wheels, it sweeps off your vehicle, kindly park and move on to higher ground for safety.

“The rainwater must have risen above our ankles, once it happens like this, the flood has the capacity to carry you off.”

The NEMA boss warned people living in buildings with signs of danger to report to the appropriate agencies for assistance.

“Residents of Lagos Island, Eti-Osa, Alimosho, Amuwo Odofin, Ikeja, Ojo, Kosofe, Apapa, Epe, Oshodi-Isolo, Shomolu, Surulere and Ajeromi /Ifelodun LGAs, are advised to be more careful when it rains.”
