SAN FRANCISCO, November 25, (THEWILL) – World football governing body FIFA has released the shortlists for the 2020 Best FIFA Football Awards. It includes nominees for Best Men’s Player and Best Women’s Player of the year, as well as the two coaching prizes and the annual Puskas Award for best goal.

THEWILL recalls that France Football cancelled the Ballon d’Or, awarded annually to the world’s best footballer, for this year because of the “lack of a sufficiently level playing field” caused by the coronavirus pandemic. This means that FIFA will be presiding over the highest profile individual global awards this year.

For the Best FIFA Men’s Player award, won last year by Lionel Messi, the nominees include Liverpool trio Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane. Messi is once more nominated as is ageing rival Cristiano Ronaldo. Bayern Munich goal-machine Robert Lewandowski is an early favourite to win.
