BEVERLY HILLS, January 18, (THEWILL) – On Monday, world football governing body FIFA dismissed Atletico Madrid’s appeal against the ban it slammed on Kieran Trippier for breaching Football Association betting rules around his transfer to La Liga. Trippier transferred to the current league leaders in July 2019 from North London club Tottenham Hotspur in a move worth £20 million.

As reported by THEWILL last month, based on evidence from text messages exchanged with a friend where he advised the said friend to “lump on” his move while betting with the foreknowledge that his move was being finalised, the 30-year-old Atletico Madrid and England full-back was hit with a 10-week suspension last month.

In a swift reaction, Atletico appealed against the suspension in a bid to counter the allegation and reverse the charge. But, football’s world governing body summarily dismissed that appeal with this Monday’s announcement and released a statement to that effect.

“The FIFA appeal committee has dismissed the appeal lodged by the club Atletico Madrid in a case concerning the player Kieran Trippier,” the statement read.

“As a consequence, the decision of the FIFA disciplinary committee passed on 23 December 2020 is confirmed, extending sanctions imposed on the player by the English FA to have worldwide effect.”

Yet, there remains a loophole that can be exploited by Madrid’s leading club to their advantage. An attempt by the English Football Association to revise the dates of Trippier’s ban did not sail through. The implication is if Atletico appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, Trippier would be free to continue playing.

England’s own independent regulatory commission dismissed the FA’s application for a revision of the effective dates of the ban, which ends on 28 February. It is that loophole that gives the defender a lifeline to avoid a lengthy period away from action with FIFA’s heavy ban.

Trippier, who has been crucial to Atletico’s fine vein of form this season, was found guilty of four of the seven charges levelled against him in the case. Though away from two La Liga games due to the ban, he provided an assist upon his return in last Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Sevilla which kept Atletico top of the standings in Spain.
