BEVERLY HILLS, May 16, (THEWILL) – La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid gave themselves a bump up the path to claiming the league from their city rivals Real Madrid in Sunday’s fixture against Osasuna with a late Luis Suarez goal. The crucial home tie came after Los Rojiblancos secured a decisive, though shaky, victory over Real Sociedad in their last game, and carried their bid further because Real also won their Sunday match.

Atletico began the Wanda Metropolitano fixture against the men from Pamplona at top of the table, two points clear of Zinedine Zidane’s side in second-placed and four clear of third-placed Barcelona, whose lost to Celta Vigo was another disappointing end of season collapse for Ronald Koeman’s side.

However, city rivals Atletico and Real renewed their title contention with two victories on the night, with Zidane’s charges beating Athletic Club by a lone goal, away from home, to match Diego Simeone’s victory over Osasuna while denying them the chance to claim the title with one match remaining.

Osasuna gave a good account of themselves belying their 11th position in the league standings. It demonstrated the culmination of a solid league campaign in the 2020/2021 calendar. They fought valiantly but victory was a long shot and they may have settled for a draw but Atletico’s resilience and Suarez’s strike made the difference.

The first half, just like in the Real versus Athletic Club game, ended in a deadlock. Simeone’s side thought they had taken a crucial lead on the hour mark, when Stefan Savic had the ball in the net, only for the referee to rule it out for offside and restore the goalless score.

Osasuna then took the lead through Ante Budimir in the 75th minute to give Simeone and his men a shock. But, when it looked like the dark clouds of doom and gloom were descending on Atletico’s season, Renan Lodi hit back in the 83rd minute to equalise and prod the team to go for victory.

The victory eventually came and it was a story in twisted fate because just as Barcelona could not find the goals in their recent matches to keep them competitive, the striker, Suarez, that they offloaded to fierce rivals Atletico provided his side with the goal they needed at the dying minute.

El Pistolero, as Suarez is fondly called, capped his man of the match performance with the goal that may see his side lift the trophy on the final Matchday.

It was predicted to go down the wire and that is how La Liga for the 2020/2021 season will be decided. Atletico will travel to face Real Valladolid with their title aspirations in their own hands. They are a win away from celebrating as the champions of Spain for the first time since the 2013/2014 season.
