March 19, (THEWILL) – Everton’s pair of appeals against a red card issued to Allan during the 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Thursday were both turned down.
The English Premier League side initially filed an appeal claiming unjust dismissal. It was followed by another and the focus of their second appeal was on whether Allan had been unfairly punished.
THEWILL recalls that in the 83rd minute of the game, the Brazilian was controversially sent for an early shower for a challenge on his namesake Allan Saint-Maximin.
Although referee Craig Pawson had initially given it a yellow card, the judgement was overturned after a VAR review, prompting Everton manager, Frank Lampard, to criticise the decision.
Unlike Lucas Digne’s appeal for a red card at Southampton, which was reduced to one match after additional review, Allan’s three-match suspension will stay as both of Everton’s appeals were denied.
In post-match comments, a furious Lampard criticised the decision to send off Allan: “It’s not a red card. Alan Shearer, Mr Newcastle, just said it. The frustrating thing for us we had, in my opinion, the most blatant one against Man City — the referee didn’t see it, VAR got it wrong and we get an apology.
“This one the referee sees it, he delivers the correct verdict of a yellow card and VAR somehow changes it. Did you seriously endanger a player for kicking him on the foot? That’s football. It’s a yellow, yes. It’s a strong yellow, yes. Did it warrant an overturn? No.”
When club football returns after the international break, Allan will miss Everton’s FA Cup quarter-final match against Crystal Palace, as well as their league fixtures against West Ham on April 3 and Burnley on April 6.
