England’s Dean Henderson Withdraws From Euros 2020 With Hip Injury

June 15, (THEWILL)- Another injury casualty has befallen the English squad with the withdrawal of the Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson from Three Lions’ Euro 2020 unit. The goalkeeper’s hip injury is the reason for his withdrawal and Aaron Ramsdale of Sheffield United will take his place in the squad.

Henderson’s ability to train with the rest of his teammates at the continental tournament has been severely limited due to the hip problem. It was therefore decided that the best option was for him to withdraw completely.

It is possible to replace him because UEFA rules permit goalkeepers to be replaced on medical grounds at any stage of the competition even after squad selections had been made final before the tournament began.

The Sheffield keeper Ramsdale was part of the provisional 33-man England squad chosen by Gareth Southgate and will now follow standard COVID-19 testing protocol before entering the camp to join the rest of the squad.

Previously uncapped, the 23-year-old will prepare with teammates for England’s next Group D game on Friday against Scotland. Ramsdale will in the reserves, on the bench alongside Sam Johnstone, with the latter now likely to be first alternative should anything happen to starter Jordan Pickford.

THEWILL recalls that Ramsdale has already represented England at tournament level this year but at the group stage of the Under-21 European Championship in March.

The keeper also previously won the Under-19 European Championship with the junior lions in 2017 and will be hoping to add the winners medal at the senior level to his collection.
