August 01, (THEWILL) – In a nail-biting Euro 2022 final, Chloe Kelly and Ella Toone, etched their names into the annals of English football as Sarina Wiegman’s superb Lionesses defeated Germany 2-1 after extra time.
With a superb finish in the 62nd minute, Toone gave England the lead at Wembley, but Germany stung the hosts when Lina Magull equalised with 11 minutes remaining in regulation time forcing the final into extra time. It was the first Women’s Euros final to require extra time since 2001.
Germany were relishing their chances. 21 years ago, they defeated Sweden to win their fifth championship; since then, they have won three more.
At England’s national stadium, though, Kelly made sure there would not be a ninth, poking in the winning goal in the 110th minute, ripping off her jersey, and sprinting off in jubilation.
After the men’s team came agonisingly close to winning the senior European Championship last year, the women’s team, captained by Leah Williamson, has now won it. It was a title England had never previously claimed but now, led by Sarina Wiegman, they have lifted it in front of their home crowds.
