January 19, (THEWILL) – Egypt qualified for the TotalEnergies 2021 Africa Cup of Nations knockout stages with a 1-0 victory over Sudan, courtesy of a Mohamed Abdelmonem goal.
The seven-time AFCON champions finished second in Group D, behind Nigeria, who beat them in their first game of the tournament, and will most likely meet Ivory Coast in the last 16.
Early in the game, Mostafa Mohamed was denied by Sudan goalkeeper Mohamed Mustafa, but Abdelmonem got the better of him in the 35th minute with a powerful header from the edge of the six-yard box from a corner.
In the 60th minute, Mohamed Salah was unable to complete a mazy run, and Amr El Soleya was unable to capitalise on a lovely lay-off from the Liverpool attacker immediately after.
Egypt qualified for the knockout stages because Mohamed El-Shenawy saved Mohamed Abdel Raman’s free-kick and got his head in the way of Mustafa Karshoum’s follow-up, preventing Sudan from mounting a spectacular comeback.
