Eguavoen Appointed as Technical Direction of the Nigeria Football Federation

BEVERLY HILLS, October 21, (THEWILL) – The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has approved the appointment of ex-Super Eagles Captain and coach Augustine Eguavoen as the Technical Director of the NFF.

THEWILL learnt that 55-year-old Eguavoen, a former Eagles defender, was reportedly close to being appointed as coach of Malian giants and 2009 CAF Confederation Cup champions Stade Malian, before this domestic appointment.

Also appointed were Paul Aigbogun, former Flying Eagles coach, who was made Deputy Director of Technical and Scouting for the Federation, while Garba Lawal, ex-Super Eagles midfielder, will be the Chief Technical Officer.

Other appointments were contained in the statement providing the information released by the Federation.

“The Executive Committee approved a presentation by the Chairman of the Technical & Development Committee for the appointment of former Super Eagles’ Captain and Coach, Mr. Augustine Eguavoen, as the new Technical Director of the NFF,” the statement read.

“He will work with the following persons, whose appointments were also approved: Mr. Paul Aigbogun (Deputy Director, Technical & Scouting); Terry Babatunde Eguaoje (Consultant on Coaching & Development); Abdulrafiu Yusuf (Assistant Director, Coaching & Development); Siji Lagunju (Assistant Director, Training & Development) and; Garba Lawal (Chief Technical Officer).

“The appointments are with immediate effect.”

A certified coach, Eguavoen last managed the Greek club, APS Zakynthos, between September 2018 and February 2019.

He represented Nigeria at the 1994 World Cup, winning the African Cup of Nations that year, before calling it quits as the national and international level after the France 1998 World Cup. He started his coaching career in Malta with Sliema Wanderers in 2000 and guided them to a second-place finish in his first season.

Eguavoen continued his coaching career with the Nigerian side Bendel Insurance in 2002 before being named Nigeria’s U-20 coach in August 2010. He put qualification for the 2012 London Olympic Games as target for his team, but they were unfortunate to have been knocked out in the group stages. On 5 December 2011, he resigned from his job following the failure to secure the Olympics ticket.

In 2005, he was named head coach of the Eagles and steered them to a third-place finish at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nation (AFCON) in Egypt.

Eguavoen replaces the former Technical Director of the NFF Bitrus Bewarang whose contract expired in June.

THEWILL learnt that Eguavoen was given the job after the football body’s first choice, another ex-Super Eagles players and coach Emmanuel Amuneke turned down the offer over monetary terms disagreement and other personal ambitions of his.

Eguavoen was born on the 19th of August, 1965 in Sapele, Nigeria. He is expected to earn three million naira (N3m) as monthly salary.
