Dulux Mocks Tottenham On Twitter After Being Announced As Paint Supplier

BEVERLY HILLS, April 15, (THEWILL) – In an unusual football season of pandemic control, there was some off-pitch drama from Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League that caught fire online as it went viral. On Thursday morning, they announced that Dulux, the internationally available brand of architectural paint, was their new official paint.

On the surface, this was an unusual public announcement to make but not completely off as they were putting finishing touches to the Wembley Stadium.

In the statement, Spurs announced: “We are delighted to announce Dulux, the nation’s number one paint brand, as our first ever Official Paint Supplier. The relationship will see us benefit from the unrivalled expertise in paint and colour that Dulux provides.”

Nuno Pena, AkzoNobel Marketing Director for UK & Ireland, the owners of Dulux, commented: “Our relationship with Tottenham Hotspur is a perfect synergy of two iconic British brands. Spurs are one of the best-known football teams in the Premier League and in Europe, while at Dulux we remain the nation’s number one paint brand.”

While Jon Babbs, the Stadium Director at Tottenham Hotspur, added: “We are delighted to welcome Dulux as our Official Paint Supplier. It is important that we have the best products available as we strive to maintain excellence at our Stadium and Training Centre facilities.”

But, things went askew when less than half an hour after the announcement was made, what seemed to be Dulux’s Twitter account bizarrely posted a meme of an “unused trophy cabinet” with the Spurs logo emblazoned on it and a phone number for any prospective buyer to call in response to @rohit001 tweeting: “Time to paint that trophy cabinet.”

In another tweet, when asked by a tweeter named “Chris” if the Dulux dog could play centre back, Dulux responded: “He might do a better job Chris.”

Again when user “Glaoch orm Eanna” said: “Paint the dusty trophy cabinet,” the Dulux account fired back: “Don’t be silly, surfaces should be dust free before painting” as an allusion to the club having not used the cabinet in a while.

These tweets immediately sparked negative responses from a set of Spurs supporters, who did not share the banter and, of course, rival football fans, who mocked them. However, as the controversial tweet went extra vital, it was eventually deleted.

When the links to the tweets were checked, all that appeared was “Sorry, that page doesn’t exist!”

However, as usual and unfortunately for Dulux, the screenshots had been saved and will live in infamy online.

It is uncertain who was behind the handle doing the initial responses to the tweets and unclear if any official explanation will be given.
