January 06, (THEWILL) – Members of the Lagos State chapter of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) on Thursday staged a protest in front of Dowen college, in the Lekki area of the State, to express their grievance after the Lagos state government cleared five students and five staff of the school of any complicity in the death of Sylvester Oromoni Jnr.

THEWILL recalls that 12-year-old Oromoni Jnr was reported dead on Wednesday, Dec. 1 2021, by a Twitter user, @perrisonoromoni who claimed to be the deceased’s cousin.

Oromoni was allegedly beaten by his school colleagues and given a chemical substance to drink after he rejected demands to join a cult group.

The five students and five staff of the school linked to his death were on Wednesday acquitted by the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The DPP Director, Adetutu Oshinusi, had said the report issued by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and the Central Hospital, Warri, agreed that the causes of Oromoni’s death were septicaemia, lobar pneumonia with acute pyelonephritis, pyomyositis of the right ankle and acute bacterial pneumonia due to severe sepsis.

The DPP’s legal advice, therefore, concluded that based on these findings, there is “no prima facie case of murder, involuntary manslaughter and or malicious administering of poison with intent to harm against the five students”.

However, the IYC on Thursday vowed to occupy Dowen college if the Lagos state government opens Dowen college stating that ”justice has not been delivered” for the death of their son, Sylvester Oromoni.

A leader of the protesting youths who spoke to newsmen as they staged a protest in front of the school this afternoon, said, ”We are here today to express our anger and grievances with the fake and corrupt report released by the Lagos state Director of the Department of Public Prosecution that this school where cultists are being trained and recruited, that the five people that killed our son without trial, without concluded investigation, they said they cleared this school to open.

“If they open this school, the whole Ijaw nation will come to this school. Let them try us and see”

The protesting youths also called on Sylvester’s spirit to arise and ensure he gets justice.
