August 30, (THEWILL) – Stella Damasus has revealed that it is not good to ask victims of domestic violence why they didn’t leave their abusers.
She made it known in a video, where she spoke on how to handle victims of domestic violence.
According to her, such questions should not be asked because it will further compound the victim’s problem.
She revealed that it’s better to listen to such people and look for a way to help them.
“I want to beg you, when you know someone who is going through domestic violence in the hands of their partner or something, the first thing we want is for them to leave that horrible situation. The first thing to do is not to ask them, why aren’t you leaving?
“You are adding to their problem at that point because their mind condition. They have been brain washed into thinking it is their fault or they are unworthy. Some of them are made to think that without their partners, they are nothing. They have been like this for a long time.
“So it is not fair to go and ask them why they didn’t leave because you are still accusing them, making them feel the way their spouse made them feel.
“The best way to do it is to understand them, listen to them and find help for them. Whether it is shelter, whether it is law enforcement, whatever it is you can do for them, start there”, she stated.
