BEVERLY HILLS, May 10, (THEWILL) – Just as THEWILL reported earlier on Monday, English Premier League side Manchester United have confirmed the contract extension of their Uruguayan star Edinson Cavani after the veteran agreed a one-year extension to his deal.

The deal puts exit rumours of the player returning to South America to sign for Boca Juniors to rest and ensures that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils will continue to benefit from Cavani’s skills, experience and all round uplifting attitude until June 2022.

Cavani’s initial contract was a single season deal after he moved to Old Trafford as a free agent last October. The forward has been a big hit at United with a goal-scoring frequency that has been very instrumental to the progress Solskjaer’s side has made. His 15-goal contribution in all competitions helped United reach this season’s UEFA Europa League final.

In comments after the deal was made public, Cavani told the club’s website: “Over the season, I have developed a great affection for the club and everything that it represents.

“I feel a deep bond with my team-mates and the staff who work behind the scenes here. They give me extra motivation every day and I know that, together, we can achieve special things. From the very first moment that I arrived, I felt the confidence of the manager.

“As a player, this belief gives you the perfect opportunity to play your best football and I want to thank him for that.

The 34-year-old has become a popular player with United fans even though coronavirus enforced stadium lockouts have denied them the chance of supporting him with chants and expressing their appreciation of his contributions in person.

However, if the plans hold, United will play once with some socially-distanced supporters inside Old Trafford in the final home game of the season next week. That will be a little foretaste for Cavani of the normalcy that can be expected next season.

He has admitted that he cannot wait for that to come about: “I have been touched with how much the supporters have wanted me to stay, and I will give everything to bring them happiness and joy with my performances on the field.

“I’ve not yet been able to play in front of the Old Trafford crowd and that is something that I cannot wait to do.”
