October 20, (THEWILL) – England and Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin has suffered a setback in his recovery from a quadriceps injury. He has not played for the club since August 28, and his return is still “a number of weeks” away.

A club statement confirmed the news stating that “Dominic Calvert-Lewin has suffered a setback in his rehabilitation from a quadriceps injury and will remain out for a number of weeks.

“The Everton striker has not played since the Blues’ Premier League clash at Brighton & Hove Albion on 28 August, when he scored from the penalty spot in a 2-0 victory.

“Calvert-Lewin will continue to receive specialist treatment and an update on the England international’s fitness will be provided in due course.”

The striker had started the season well, scoring three goals in his first three Premier League appearances. However, these performances took place while he was hampered by a broken toe, which prevented him from training.

Everton are now hoping that Richarlison, a fellow attacker, will return from a knee injury against Watford on Saturday. Since a 3-1 win over Burnley in mid-September, the Brazilian has not played.

The Toffees have had a difficult week. Following Abdoulaye Doucoure’s metatarsal fracture earlier this week, as THEWILL reported, today’s news confirms that Everton will be without two of their most effective players for the foreseeable future.

Calvert-Lewin was the spearhead of Everton’s attack, and Doucoure, the beating heart of their midfield. Last season, the Englishman scored 16 Premier League goals, nine more than second-placed Richarlison, and he was Everton’s first-choice penalty taker this season.

Calvert-Lewin is far more suited to Rafael Benitez’s switch to a counter-attacking system that emphasises speed and wide crosses than Salomon Rondon, who has filled in for the striker. Richarlison benefits from his presence as well.
