April 23, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich has won the Bundesliga for the 10th time in a row after defeating Borussia Dortmund in the Der Klassiker on Saturday.
With only nine points to play for, Bayern took a 12-point lead and mathematically secured Bayern would retain the German title for at least another year.
Bayern took the lead in the first half thanks to goals from Serge Gnabry and Robert Lewandowski. Dortmund got a goal back through Emre Can from the penalty spot, but Jamal Musiala made it 3-1 late on.
It is the first time in Bundesliga history that a single team has won ten consecutive League titles. In reality, prior to this Bayern team’s run, the record was three since the modern period began in 1963 — that mark was set by Bayern sides from the 1970s and 1980s, as well as Borussia Monchengladbach.
The current run began with the Bundesliga title in 2012/13, when Bayern reclaimed domestic dominance from a Dortmund squad led by Jurgen Klopp.
In his first season in command, Julian Nagelsmann became the sixth different coach to manage one of the ten titles, following Jupp Heynckes, Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti, Niko Kovac, and Hansi Flick.
