June 29, (THEWILL) – A resounding victory over Thanasi Kokkinakis saw Novak Djokovic pick a guaranteed spot in Wimbledon’s round three.
Djokovic easily defeated his opponent, winning the match 6-1 6-4 6-2 and wasting little time to get going. The Serbian broke Kokkinakis’ serve in the second game, and cruised to an easy first set victory in under 30 minutes.
Even though Kokkinakis fought harder in the second set, Djokovic held him at a distance, and Kokkinakis once more regretted taking an early break. However, not everything went the Serb’s way as in game nine, Kokkinakis remained steadfast and eventually converted his fourth game point, forcing Djokovic to serve out the set.
In the opening game of set three, the number one seed broke once more, and after a Kokkinakis backhand into the net for a 4-1 score, it appeared that he was going to fight back. Though, Djokovic held to get himself within one game of the victory, Kokkinakis asserted some sort of nerve even if it was only enough to get Djokovic to serve for the match.
Djokovic complied as required, saving a late break point, and will now play fellow countryman Miormir Kecmanovic in the fourth round.
