Djokovic Averts First-round Wimbledon Upset

June 28, (THEWILL) – On Monday, defending champion Novak Djokovic overcame Soonwoo Kwon to go to the second round of Wimbledon, beating the world number 81 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-4, for his 22nd straight triumph at SW19.

With Kwon leading in the first and second sets, the 20-time Grand Slam champion found it difficult to establish his dominance early on. However, with time, Kwon’s 3-1 advantage was overcome even though Kwon’s performance in the second set captivated the Center Court audience, and he duly won it with just three games remaining.

Djokovic has not had a memorable season thus far especially after losses at the Australian Open and Roland-Garros. Victory at the All-England Club will restore some slice of his invincibility that was his aura after he claimed his 20th Grand Slam against arch-rival Rafa Nadal on clay.

In his post-match comments, the Serbian said: “This court is truly special for me. It’s always been the court I’ve dreamt about playing on. All my childhood dreams came true on this court and it’s an honour to play on the Centre Court at Wimbledon. Credit to Kwon for playing some really high-quality tennis; he deserves the applause.

He will now play the winner of the first-round match between Thanasi Kokkinakis and Kamil Majchrzak.
