Nate Diaz defeated Tony Ferguson in the main event of UFC 279, at the T-Mobile Arena, in Las Vegas, by submission in the fourth round.
In the opening round, both fighters made an effort to demonstrate some of their boxing, but Diaz’s cut on Ferguson’s shin after Ferguson checked a leg kick was the most significant highlight of the round.
Ferguson also had his share of successful kicks, and Diaz had some success with his boxing combinations, as the fight progressed. Both boxers displayed some theatrical behaviour, with El Cucuy lying down in the cage’s centre, to the amusement of some of those watching.
The third round was when things really started to pick up. Ferguson resorted to trying to take Diaz down as Diaz upped the ante with his boxing. However, as Diaz locked in the guillotine to put an end to the night, it turned out to be a terrible error in judgement for Ferguson.
Diaz’s victory is his final appearance in the Octagon for UFC fans. When Khamzat Chimaev’s weight exceeded the limit for welterweight competition by 7.5 pounds, the planned main event between Diaz and Chimaev was cancelled. Diaz kept UFC 279 alive by agreeing to fight Ferguson, a previous lightweight title contender. And, he leaves a true victor.
