September 26, (THEWILL) – With a 2-0 victory over France, Denmark laid down a challenge for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, but they narrowly missed qualifying for the Nations League Finals.
The Danes were in a strong position to go to the last four after Kasper Dolberg and Andreas Skov Olsen scored in the first half, but in the other game of Group A1, Croatia scored twice in the second half to defeat Austria and take first place.
However, a resounding victory over the World Cup champions France in Copenhagen served as a stark reminder of Denmark’s status as a dark horse for Qatar after the country successfully advanced to the Euro 2020 semifinals.
Les Bleus avoided dropping to the second division thanks to Austria’s defeat, but Didier Deschamps may be having second thoughts following a lacklustre campaign with no further matches until the World Cup begins in November.
Despite having early opportunities to put Kasper Schmeichel to the test, Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe were unable to strike the back of the net. In the second half, Mbappe nearly beat Schmeichel twice, but Denmark’s game management proved too resolute to be overcome, leading to a renowned victory.
