Defence Chief Irabor Hosts New Army Chief Yahaya, Who Assumes Duty

BEVERLY HILLS, May 28, (THEWILL) – The newly-appointed Chief of Army Staff, Major General Farouk Yahaya, has officially resumed duties.

He was received at Army Headquarters by the Chief of Policy and Planning, Maj.-Gen. Ben Ahanotu, who also briefed him.

The COAS, however, asked for a minute’s silence in honour of his predecessor, the late General Attahiru, and other officers who died with him.

Thereafter, he asked journalists to leave the hall to enable him to have a closed door meeting with officers.

He did not make any statement before departing the Army Headquarters.

Yahaya first visited the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, before coming to Army Headquarters for the taking over ceremony.

The CDS congratulated Yahaya on his appointment as the 22nd COAS, describing it as a well-deserved appointment. He also wished him a successful tenure in office as he assumed command.

Irabor further urged the new COAS to build on the legacy of his predecessor, particularly in the fight against insurgency and banditry.

The COAS was accompanied on the visit by the Chief of Policy and Plans Headquarters Nigerian Army, Maj.- Gen. Benjamin Ahanotu.

Highlight of the visit was the CDS’s presentation of the Nigerian Army flag to the new COAS.

THEWILL reports that President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, May 27, 2021, appointed Maj.-Gen. Yahaya as the new Army Chief following the death of Lt.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru along with 10 other officers in a plane crash on May 21 in Kaduna.

The new COAS was until his appointment, the Theatre Commander, Operation Hadin Kai, the military counter-insurgency operation in the North East.
