September 30, (THEWILL) – The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has asked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to as a “matter of urgency”, sack its National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, over alleged bribery scandal rocking the party.

THEWILL had reported that some members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, on Thursday, raised alarm over “suspicious” money paid into their accounts.

The members including the party’s Deputy National Chairman (South), Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, refunded N36m to the party’s account; National Vice Chairman South-South, Chief Dan Orbih (N28m) and National Woman Leader, Prof. Stella Effah-Attoe (N28m).

But the PDP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, dismissed the alleged bribe as mischievous attempt to cause disaffection in the PDP.

Ologunagba said the said money was a Housing Allowance duly approved and paid to NWC members and staff of the party.

But worried by unfolding development in the party, the CUPP said the National Chairman of the PDP, Senator Iyorcha Ayu, should be removed, noting that his sack will unify the party members.

It expressed shock, over allegations that Ayu and the party’s National Secretary, are gradually looting over N10 billion realised by the party from nomination fees paid by aspirants.

The CUPP in a statement by its spokesman, Ikenga Ugochinyere, called on the National Executive Council (NEC) of the party, to as a matter of urgency reverse its “Confidence Vote” earlier passed on Ayu.

The statement reads in part: “Just recently Ayu was again alleged to have received N1 billion from a presidential aspirant in Lagos, without remitting same to the party, and the money was said to be given to him in order to influence proceedings ahead of the party’s primaries in Abuja back in May.

“We are very worried about the constant allegations trailing the party under AYU’s leadership. Ayu and Samuel Anyanwu continue stay in office is creating more crisis, disunity in the party and will hamper PDP chances in 2023.

“The duo’s sack will not only benefit and unite the party, it will also enable all aggrieved members to come together and work for the party’s victory in 2023.

“PDP’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, was allegedly said to have paid over N100 million to the NWC members after the party’s primaries. The money was said to be part of the over N10 billion realised by the party from nomination fees paid by aspirants.

“Six members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have accused National Chairman Iyorchia Ayu of bribing members for their support over allegations of misappropriation against him.

“This shows that Ayu is insincere. The party’s NEC members should quickly show Ayu and the party’s National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, the way out for the party to be unified ahead of 2023 general elections.

“The two party leaders are carrying out internal anti and divisive activities which have been polarising the party.

“I call on the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to press it on chieftains of the party and Ayu on the need to save the party from further polarisation and loss of our base in the South.

“This can be achieved by ensuring that PDP National Chairman, Senator Ayu quits the party now alongside the National Secretary, Anyanwu.

“Anyanwu is working hard for the Imo State Governor, Uzodinma, on a mission to destroy Imo PDP.”
