December 08, (THEWILL) – Following a severe COVID-19 outbreak inside the club, Tottenham Hotspur are poised to request that their English Premier League match against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday be postponed.
THEWILL recalls that the Spurs’ dilemma was initially revealed on Monday, when lateral flow tests revealed that up to six players had tested positive for coronavirus.
The Lilywhites had thought that more PCR testing might relieve some of the afflicted squad members from having to isolate, but the situation has subsequently “worsened” according to Dan Kilpatrick of the Evening Standard.
UEFA directives specify that a game must be played if a team has 13 players available, therefore Spurs’ Europa Conference League match against Rennes on Thursday will not be disrupted; nevertheless, the club is asking to have their Premier League match against the Seagulls pushed back.
Those who tested positive for COVID-19 would have to isolate for at least ten days. Spurs’ timing could not be more inconvenient, as they face Leicester City just four days after the Brighton fixture.
Tottenham’s preparations for their crucial match against Liverpool on Sunday, December 19th, will also be hampered by these circumstances.
