BEVERLY HILLS, January 18, (THEWILL) – Schools across Nigeria resumed for academic activities on Monday amid the second wave of COVID-19.

Activities at some schools across the country in compliance with the COVID-19 protocols released by the Federal Government were partially observed.

In Lagos, the government said it will suspend some of the regular activities in schools in the state as part of measures to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo, who made this known during a visit to some schools in the state said, activities like morning assembly and sports will be suspended for now.

She said, “There are some routines that will ensure that we are able to keep children away from each other. For one, no sports day, which is a pity because school is all about relationships. No assembly, so that we don’t all come into one place. We are going to keep coming around, holding meetings, talking to them and encouraging them.”

On the issue of face masks, Adefisayo admitted that they are uncomfortable but advised the students to keep wearing one to protect themselves

She said, “I know they find it uncomfortable. I keep asking, isn’t it better to be uncomfortable and alive? So, let’s cope with the discomfort. We have to keep on reinforcing the message, insisting that no mask, no entry.”

In similar manner, activities at some schools Ogun and Osun states, observed partial compliance with COVID-19 protocols.

At the Community High School, Ibafo, some of the students were being delayed outside for not wearing face masks while the students scampered around to find where to buy one.

Similarly, at Salvation Army Grammar School and Osogbo Grammar School, officials barred students without face masks from entering the schools.

Some of the affected students at Osogbo Grammar School, said they could not afford to buy the items as they were only given money for their midday meal.

However, no thermometer was also in use at the two schools.

In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, activities in compliance with the COVID-19 protocols were also partially observed.

At the GSS, Karu, two spots for washing of hands were provided at the school gate, but no temperature check for those entering the premises.

Students and members of staff were, however, seen wearing their face masks before entering.

More compliance was, however, noticed among private schools
