BEVERLY HILLS, July 02, (THEWILL) – A Federal High Court in Lagos will hear the suit challenging the conviction of Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele, her husband, Abdulrasheed Bello (JJC Skillz) and 236 others.

Olukoya Ogungbeje, a lawyer, is asking for a court declaration stating that the law upon which Akindele and others were tried was not in line with the 1999 constitution.

THEWILL recalls that the actress and others were arrested and sentenced for violating the Lagos State Infectious Diseases (Emergency Prevention) Regulations 2020 when she hosted a birthday party in her home to celebrate her husband’s birthday. The party had more than 20 persons in attendance, breaking the NCDC and Lagos government guideline for assembly during the covid-19 pandemic.

Ogungbeje is arguing that the arrest and conviction of the actress and others lacks legal backing, insisting that the law upon which their conviction was strange to law.

“I have a duty to protect and defend the sanctity of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from any contravention or infraction,” the lawyer said, citing an Appeal Court’s decision in 2016 involving Faith Okafor vs Lagos State.
