Update: Coronavirus: Ghana’s Confirmed Cases Hit 152 With Five Deaths As South Africa Tops Africa

BEVERLY HILLS, March 29, (THEWILL) – The coronavirus cases in Ghana now stands at 152 with five deaths as at Sunday night, after 11 new cases were reported. Ten of the new cases were among persons who were under mandatory quarantine in Tamale under the direction of the Regional Security Committee of the Northern Region.

The 10 cases were Guinean residents who travelled through Burkina Faso and Togo to Ghana and were picked following intelligence report. The eleventh case was recorded in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, the Disease Surveillance Department, Ghana Health Service, said in a statement Sunday.

Nigeria, Ghana’s West African neighbor, has 111 confirmed cases and one death from the disease as at midnight Sunday, while South Africa has reported 1187 confirmed cases as some doctors, nurses and health workers on the frontlines become infected.

South Africa says it is participating in the Public Health Emergency Solidarity Trial that has been initiated by the World Health Organisation to conduct a clinical trial to find effective treatment for COVID-19.

Dr Zwelini Mkhize, South Africa’s Minister of Health, said WHO has convened an independent group of experts to review evidence from laboratory, animal and clinical studies to prioritize treatments for inclusion in the trial. This independentgroup identified the following treatment options for inclusion in the trial:

– Remdesivir: a drug which was previous used in an Ebola trial;

– Lopinavir/ritonavir: a licensed treatment for HIV/AIDS

– Lopinavir/ritonavir with interferon beta-1a: used for multiple sclerosis;

– Chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine: drugs used to treat malaria and rheumatology conditions respectively.
