Controversial Penalty Sees Vallecano Defeat Real Madrid 3-2 At Home

November 08, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid was denied the chance to climb back to the top of La Liga after suffering a 3-2 loss at Rayo Vallecano as Oscar Trejo scored the game-winning goal with a contentious second-half penalty.

The Monday night loss at Vallecas, where referee Juan Martinez Munuera and VAR had a huge impact on the outcome, means that Carlo Ancelotti’s team is now two points behind league leaders Barcelona.

Santiago Comesana found the back of the net with a first-half goal before Madrid took the lead on Luka Modric’s penalty and an Eder Militao header. However, Alvaro Garcia equalised late in a breathless first half that was a thrill for the fans in the crowds and everywhere following.

However, there was still more drama to come as Thibaut Courtois stopped a penalty kick from Trejo in the 67th minute but Trejo was asked to retake because Dani Carvajal had encroached into the box and he converted at the second time of asking to seal the incredible victory for the hosts.

On Thursday, Madrid plays host to Cadiz in their final match before the World Cup break, while Rayo hosts Celta Vigo at home.
