August 5, (THEWILL) – Odunayo Adekuroye of Nigeria won the gold medal in women’s 57 kg freestyle wrestling at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
On Friday, Adekuroye defeated Anshu Malik of India 7-3, giving Nigeria its first wrestling gold medal. Although under pressure, the 28-year-old stood up to the Indian’s spirited challenge to claim victory and top place.
In the 100 metres hurdle event, another promising competition for Nigeria, Nigeria’s record-breaking Tobi Amusan, stated that she was “exhausted” after winning the world championship gold last month, but she looked great on Friday as she easily advanced to the final.
The 25-year-old started the defence of her title by topping the qualifying times in windy conditions with a time of 12.40 seconds. She is the favourite to take the gold medal, but will be against a field of contestants determined to finish ahead of her on the podium.
