April 19, (THEWILL) – Colombia’s coach, Reinaldo Rueda, was fired on Monday after the team failed to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar.
Rueda’s assistants have also resigned, according to the Colombian Football Federation. The federation said it will begin looking for a replacement for Rueda, who has held the position for 15 months and is 65 years old.
Colombia placed sixth in South American World Cup qualifying, one point behind Peru, which will play an Asian team in a qualifying playoff.
From 2004 to 2006, Rueda was a member of his country’s national squad for the first time. He also coached Honduras at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, as well as Ecuador at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
He quit as Chile’s coach to take over as Colombia’s coach from Carlos Queiroz, after the latter was given charge of the Egyptian national team that also failed to reach Qatar in their loss to African champions Senegal.
