January 14, (THEWILL) – Raheem Sterling of Manchester City has been named the Premier League’s Player of the Month for December.
Over the festive break, the 27-year-old had a prolific stint in front of goal, scoring five goals and contributing one assist in five games for Pep Guardiola’s team.
Sterling started December by assisting Ruben Dias’ first goal in a 2-1 win over Aston Villa, then scoring City’s first goal in a 3-1 win over Watford.
When he converted from the penalty spot against Wolverhampton Wanderers to seal a tight 1-0 win on home turf, the England international became the 32nd player in Premier League history to reach the 100-goal mark.
“I am delighted to win this award again – but December was an amazing month for the whole team,” Sterling said while speaking with his club’s website on the honour.
“The Premier League is the most challenging competition in the world, so to win all seven of our league games throughout the month of December is incredible.
“Contributing to those wins with goals has felt good and that makes me happy. Hopefully we can continue this form because 2021 has been brilliant for us.
“All of us want to win trophies at the end of the season and that is what our aim will be from now until then.”
Sterling has won the Player of the Month title three times in his career, most recently in August 2016 and November 2018.
Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard, Mason Mount, James Maddison, Son Heung-min, and City teammate Joao Cancelo were among the other nominees for the December award.
