Chelsea’s Reece James Subject Of Racist Abuse As EPL Steps In Against Recent Cases

BEVERLY HILLS, January 29, (THEWILL) – Another day, another case of racist abuse. Right-back Reece James who plays for English Premier League side Chelsea has become the latest Premier League star targeted by social media racist abuse.

THEWILL regards it as deeply concerning, the spike in online racist abuse in recent days. As reported by THEWILL, other high-profile targets of online racism include James’s Chelsea team-mate Antonio Rudiger, the Manchester United duo Anthony Martial and Axel Tuanzebe and West Brom’s Romaine Sawyers.

As distasteful as these actions are, there appears to be no signs of the abuse stopping as James took to Instagram to reveal his own share of the reprehensible behaviour.

In a message featuring the barrage of insults and slurs he received related to the colour of his skin, the defender says : “Something needs to change.”

James’s case was not more than a few hours after another EPL side, West Bromwich Albion, contacted police over alleged racist abuse directed towards midfielder Sawyers following the recent loss to Manchester City as THEWILL reported.

The Baggies want an investigation carried out to identify the culprit and apply the maximum penalty, a strict punishment from the law and a lifetime ban from The Hawthorns, their stadium.

Traditionally, the EPL handles cases of racial abuses with the most stringent of punishments to act as deterrence and, reacting to these cases, Premier League executive Richard Masters said:

“I am appalled to see the racial abuse received by players this week. Racist behaviour of any form is unacceptable and nobody should have to deal with it. Tackling online hate is a priority for football, and I believe social media companies need to do more.

“We at the Premier League will continue to support players, managers and their families who receive discriminatory online abuse. Through our central reporting system we have been able to take immediate action on cases like this and we investigate every report received, with legal action taken where possible.

“We are in regular dialogue with social media companies, challenging them to do more against discriminatory abuse on their platforms. We want to see swifter removal of offensive messages and improved identification and banning of offenders.”

The EPL’s stance remains to continue working with the clubs in the league, relevant authorities and social media companies to rid their platforms of these sorts of racist abuse, including urging the likes of Twitter and Instagram to provide more support towards identifying their users prone to such behaviour.
