BEVERLY HILLS, June 04, (THEWILL) – UEFA Champions League champions for the 2020/2021 season Chelsea have confirmed a two-year contract extension and new deal for German manager Thomas Tuchel, based on the terms of their agreement with the manager when he joined the Club in January.
Taking over from club legend Frank Lampard, the tactician oversaw a rise up the Premier League table that was inspiring for the Stamford Bridge faithfuls and finished the season in fourth place to ensure a respectable end to the season.
However, Tuchel added gloss to their campaign with the club’s second ever European conquest as UCL winners with victory over Manchester City.
Tuchel also guided the Blues to reach the FA Cup final but lost to Kelechi Iheanacho’s Leicester City, though with a spirited Chelsea display it took just a single Leicester goal of inspired quality to give it to the Foxes of the King Power Stadium.
In his remarks about the new contract Tuchel said: “I cannot imagine a better occasion for a contract renewal. I am grateful for the experience and very happy to stay part of the Chelsea family.
“There is far more to come and we are looking forward to our next steps with ambition and much anticipation.’”
Marina Granovskaia, who is a club Director at Stamford Bridge added: “When Thomas joined us in January there was still so much to play for domestically and in Europe. He slotted in seamlessly and immediately became an integral part of the Chelsea family.
“Returning us to the top four in the Premier League was crucial, and we could not be happier with our success in the Champions League which crowned a remarkable season at Chelsea.
“We are obviously extremely pleased therefore to retain Thomas for a further two years, and look forward to more achievements in the coming seasons.”
The turnaround that Tuchel orchestrated in the time he has been in charge of Chelsea has been sensational. For the 30 games he has managed, the Blues won 19 victories with only five ending in defeats. But, the most eye-watering fact is how compact the defence was seeing as they only conceded 16 goals In 30 matches. That outstanding defensive ability was responsible for much of their success and it is to Tuchel’s credit.
By taking Chelsea to the final, Tuchel became the first manager to reach back-to-back Champions League finals with two different clubs, and topped that record by winning it with the Blues. All these merited him the new contract and the reward of an improved deal.
