June 09, (THEWILL) – The Golden State Warriors gave Ime Udoka’s Boston Celtics a tough night and what was a fright in the third quarter, but Boston weathered the storm to win Game 3 and grab a 2-1 series lead in the NBA Finals.
The remarkable Stephen Curry had a customary third-quarter flurry, but the Celtics had too much offence, thanks to Jaylen Brown’s 27 points, Jayson Tatum’s 26 points, and Marcus Smart’s 24 points. Despite Curry’s 31 points and Klay Thompson’s 25 points, the Warriors were unable to claw back ahead of Boston.
The Celtics made sure to take advantage of their advantage in numbers to overpower the smaller Warriors team, who did not have a full squad to rotate their players. The GSW were outrebound 47-31, outscored 52-26 in the paint, and Boston scored more second-chance points to the tune of 22-11.
Aside from Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, who put on a show with Brown’s 27 points, nine rebounds, and five assists, and Tatum’s 26 points, nine assists, and six rebounds, Marcus Smart (24 points, five assists), and Robert Williams (10 rebounds, four blocks, three steals) all contributed significantly to the Celtics’ win.
Golden State is in in a difficult situation, needing to win Game 4 in Boston to avoid a 3-1 deficit.
