BEVERLY HILLS, January 20, (THEWILL) – About 4,500 poultry birds infected by Avian Influenza, popularly known as “Bird Flux,” were reported to have so far been destroyed in Edo State.

A source in the poultry subsector in the state, who disclosed this, said the outbreak was reported in Ovia North-East and Ikpoba Okha local government areas, respectively.

He disclosed that several poultry farms in the state had been depopulated while others had been placed on surveillance.

The source, who did not however gave details on how the flu was discovered in the affected local government areas, said the state government was doing everything possible to curtail the spread.

When contacted, the state commissioner for agriculture and natural resources, Chris Okojie, declined to comment on the renewed outbreak of the disease in the state.

THEWILL recalls that about 420 birds infected by the outbreak of the disease were in January last year destroyed in the state.
