December 31, (THEWILL) – Joao Cancelo, Manchester City defender, suffered facial injuries after being attacked in his home by miscreants he described as “four cowards.” This took place on Thursday, as Cancelo recounted later that evening in an Instagram story.
“Unfortunately today I was assaulted by four cowards who hurt me and tried to hurt my family,” he wrote. “When I showed resistance this is what happens. They managed to take all my jewelry and leave me with a face in this state.
“I don’t know how there are people with such meanness. The most important thing for me is my family and luckily they are all ok. And I after so many obstacles in my life, this is just one more that I will overcome. Firm and strong, like always.”
With the fantastic 2021 season the defender has had, the club publicly provided support. City were quick to rally behind Cancelo, once he spoke out about his ordeal, with a statement that read:
“We are shocked and appalled that Joao Cancelo and his family were subjected to a burglary at their home this evening during which Joao was also assaulted.
“Joao and his family are being supported by the Club and he is helping the police with their enquiries as they investigate this very serious matter.”
It is unclear whether Cancelo will miss City’s match against Arsenal on New Year’s Day as a result of the incident. If he is unable to play, Oleksandr Zinchenko will most likely step in at left-back.
The Portuguese’s absence would be a slight setback, since he has been one of the best players in the Premier League this season, with one goal and four assists in 19 appearances and a defensive record that has been hard to match.
